The aluminum imine complexes [RCH=NAlR'2]2 undergo thermal condensation polymerization to yield alazane [poly(alkylaminoalane)] polymers. The aluminum imine complexes are prepared in quantitative yield by reduction of nitriles, such as acetonitrile and benzonitrile, with alkylaluminum hydride reagents. These alazane polymers are thermoplastic, soluble in aprotic solvents, and display low moisture and oxygen sensitivity. The alazanes convert to aluminum nitride ceramics in non-oxidizing atmospheres above 500°C.
