Current interest in the clinical application of alloplastic grafts for treating dental and orthopedic bone defects suggested this investigation on phosphate glasses. Particularly, the calcium phosphate ceramic materials of hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate appear to be promising graft materials. Our interest in amorphous rather than crystalline ceramics centered on the potentially wide compositional variation that may be possible and their concomittant properties such as solubility.
