Abstract

One of the most successfully applied classes of biomaterials is the porous textile vascular prosthesis. Experimental and clinical investigations have been continuously conducted during the past thirty years to study tissue healing, clinical longevity and improved design of these prostheses. The vascular device retrieval program has enabled classification of the 40 or more identified mechanisms of failure of arterial prostheses into the following major groupings: A. Failure of diagnosis B. Error in implantation C. Patient contribution D. Complications of healing E. Fabrication failure F. Infection
