Hard siliceous coatings on polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) surfaces have been prepared upon hydrolyzing a tetraisocyanatosilane permeant present in biaxially oriented PET film samples. The structure of these films differs from commercial PET film materials in that silica is present both as a surface layer and as discrete submicron particles dispersed throughout the films. In order to accomplish this, it was found that suitable silica precursors should be chemically compatible with the polymer and have calculated Hildebrand solubility parameter values similar to that for PET.
