Optically induced magnetization has been observed in a 10 micron diameter sample of Cd.8Mn.2Te. A newly developed integrated SQUID magnetic spectrometer was used to study both the magnitude and the picosecond dynamics of the magnetic response as function of the energy and polarization of the optical excitation. The dramatic energy dependence of the response provides an understanding of the way in which the overall sample magnetization changes upon illumination, and the subsequent relaxation through the spin lattice interaction.
