page 137 note 1 By the way, there should be no doubt that the word niṃsidhiyā means “ a resting-place ” (cf. Charpentier, Uttarādhyayanasūtra, p. 283 ; VOJ xxix, 230, n. 2). That a well-known scholar should take it to mean “ steps leading to water ” betrays a curious lack of acquaintance with Indian conditions.
