During the summer of 1987 I was able to visit manuscript collections in Ibadan, Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, and Sokoto to check and expand data for my projected contribution to the multi–volume Arabic Literature in Africa, edited by myself and R. S. O'Fahey. These notes are based on my experiences with the various collections at that time.
This note has also appeared in volume 3 of the Bulletin of Arabia Literature in Africa, where preliminary versions of material for incorporation into the eventual multi–volume work are published. Scholars and libraries who wish to obtain copies of the Bulletin (which is free) may write to the Program of African Studies, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL 60208, U.S.A.
