Jean-Paul Poirier is Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at the Institut de Physique du Globe, Paris. His interests are in the physics of the earth's mantle and the history of seismology. His books include Creep of Crystals and Introduction to the Physics of the Earth's Interior. He is a Vice-President of the Academia Europaea and a Member of the Academie des Sciences, Paris.
