As environmental professionals we see more and more efforts within the regulatorycommunity to be "user friendly."I recently attended a meeting of environmentalprofessionals in Michigan and learned how the Department of EnvironmentalQuality is being reorganized to better serve the professional and the citizen. Suchprograms as Pollution Prevention and Technical Assistance, and The Clean CorporateCitizen (which among other things provides recognition of corporate responsibility)were exhibited. Other programs discussed were units within Education andOutreach that included Operator Training certification for hazardous materials. FromWisconsin, I learned of a regulatory office of grants and contracts, just as we havehere at Michigan State University. This unit is charged with supporting individualswho are applying for grants and loans to support environmental restoration projects.In some cases across the country, there are state-supported bonds that are administeredthrough the Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality.
