THE LARVAL CEPHALIC SETAE IN THE TANYPODINAE (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMIDAE) AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN GENERIC DETERMINATIONS

Abstract

In the subfamily Tanypodinae (Diptera: Chironomidae), 11 pairs of setae and 3 pairs of sensory pores are found on the larval head capsules. The structure and position of these cephalic setae and sensory pores exhibit strong generic differences but vary little between species within a genus. A generic key to the Tanypodinae utilizing these differences is presented for larvae of the following genera: Clinotanypus, Coelotanypus, Natarsia, Tanypus, Djalmabatista, Procladius, Psectrotanypus, Brundiniella, Macropelopia, Ablabesmyia, Guttipelopia, Hudsonimyia, Krenopelopia, Labrundinia, Larsia, Monopelopia, Nilotanypus, Paramerina, Pentaneura, Telopelopia, Thienemannimyia, Trissopelopia, and Zavrelimyia. The delineation of the frontoclypeal apotome can be used to distinguish fourth-instar from third- and earlier-instar larvae.

Résumé

Chez les chironomides de la sous-famille des Tanypodinae, on trouve 11 paires de soies et 3 paires de pores sensoriels sur la capsule céphalique. La structure et la position de ces soies et de ces pores montrent des différences génériques importantes, mais varient peu entre espèces du même genre. Une clé générique des Tanypodinae basée sur ces différences est présentée pour les larves des genres suivants : Clinotanypus, Coelotanypus, Natarsia, Tanypus, Djalmabatista, Procladius, Psectrotanypus, Brundiniella, Marcropelopia, Ablabesmyia, Guttipelopia, Hudsonimyia, Krenopelopia, Labrundinia, Larsia, Monopelopia, Nilotanypus, Paramerina, Pentaneura, Telopelopia, Thienemannimyia, Trissopelodia, Zavrelimyia. La forme de l'apotome frontoclypéal peut être utilisée pour distinguer les larves de quatrième stade des larves des stades précédents.
