Rothschild in 1917 (Novit. Zool., 24, p. 355) stated that the above name, which had previously been accepted as the “Brown-tail” or “Cul brun”, really represents the “Gold-tail” or “Cul doré”. Although this opinion was discussed and agreed to by such writers as Barnes and Benjamin in 1924 (Proc. ent. Soc. Wash., 26, p. 213) and Joannis in 1928 (Encyc. ent., Sér. B III, Lep. 3, p. 99), the great majority of systematic works since published in Europe still adhere to the interpretation of P. chrysorrhoea as the Brown-tail.
