Sur un groupe humain défini géographiquement par l'aire de la clientèle des études notariales de Saint-André-les-Alpes, en Provence dans la haute vallée du Verdon, tout au long du XVIIIe siècle, je voudrais tenter une analyse de l'alliance matrimoniale et de la filiation. J'aimerais en particulier essayer de montrer que les structures de l'alliance sont liées à la plupart des caractéristiques des groupes familiaux, notamment du groupe familial de résidence. Le groupe familial d'un jeune homme X et le groupe familial d'une jeune fille Y sont définis par un ensemble de caractères démographiques (âge des parents, nombre, sexe, âge des frères et sœurs), sociaux et économiques (valeur et nature du patrimoine, statut professionnel), politiques enfin (pouvoir municipal, charges honorifiques). L'ensemble de ces caractères oriente et même détermine les choix stratégiques qui vont conduire au mariage entre X et Y.

This work on marriage, alliance and filiation is based on the analysis of 1 256 marriage contracts, drawn up by notaries and concerning the entire population of several villages grouped aroung a bourg. The first part is a study of the factors which govern the alliance strategies. The choice of a partner is most often dictated by the interests of the parental family group, and is conditioned by a widespread practice: one of the sons, married and chosen heir to the patrimony, lives with his parents, the other members of the phratry being successively eliminated.

The second part of the work concerns the evolution of the partners in the space occupied by the human group under study. The analysis of “striking” marriages (two brothers marrying two sisters…) and of concatenations of alliances, illustrates the mechanisms involved in the circulation of alliances among individuals and groups.

Finally, by crossing the vertical and horizontal analyses, we can establish a connection between the sons of marriages with those of the decendency: this raises the question of the respect or transgression of religious tabous in regard to consanguin marriages.
