Comprehensive understanding of propulsive jet aerodynamics and aeroacoustics is key to engine design for reduced jet noise and infra-red signature in civil and military aerospace, respectively. Illustrated examples are provided of other aerodynamic/aeroacoustic problems involving jet development, including chevron nozzles, increased jet/wing/flap interference (as fan diameter increases), high acoustic environment (and potentially damaging screech) of supersonic jets on carrier decks and the strongly Three-Dimensional (3D) unsteady flow during the in-ground effect operation of Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft. To date, laboratory/rig test measurements have primarily been used to identify design solutions; increased use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) would help achieve cost/time reductions, but Reynolds-Average Navier–Stokes (RANS) CFD with statistical turbulence modelling has proven inadequate for such flows. The scenarios described are far removed from flows used to calibrate model constants, and predictive accuracy demands detailed insight into unsteady flow. Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), whilst computationally more demanding, offers a potential solution. Research undertaken to assess LES capability to address the challenges described is reviewed here. This demonstrates that tremendous progress has been made, indicating that LES can provide sufficiently accurate predictions, representing high value for engineering design. A series of validation studies of increasing realism to practical engineering systems is presented to underpin this conclusion. Finally, areas for further work are suggested to support the combined application of RANS and LES that is probably the optimum way forward.

Every manufacturing procedure is subject to tolerance variations. Over the years, a set of key characteristic features (KCF) that can explain the effect of manufacturing variations on the aero-mechanical performance of a fan blade has been devised and monitored to ensure conformality and good performance. The KCFs are derived from a cloud of coordinate measurement machine (CMM) points and are defined on approved engineering drawings for the manufactured part. In this paper, it is demonstrated that some of the traditional, common wisdom KCFs are not adequate to explain the engine performance deviation behaviour on a test bed at the sea-level condition. On the other hand, good correlation is found by analysing a set of engineering parameters drawn from a new inverse-mapping procedure of the CMM data. It is further demonstrated that a deviation measured via CMM or 3D structured light (GOM) data in cold conditions can be translated to a variation in the hot running shape of the blade. Having identified the key blade features, a cheap alternative to modifying the manufacturing procedure is devised to recover the fan performance by optimising its leading-edge shape.

To obtain the optimal solution for the performance of the turbofan engine using infrared stealth technology, an engine mathematical model with a backward infrared radiation intensity calculation module was established. The effects of infrared suppression measures on the performance of turbofan engines were analysed. Based on the multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) algorithm, the optimal solution for the performance in the cruise state of the reference engine refitted with the infrared radiation suppression module was obtained; Further, through the multiple design points (MDPs) concept, the thermal cycle optimisation design of the turbofan engine was carried out. The results show that the integrated fully shielded guiding strut (IFSGS) with air film cooling had the ideal infrared suppression effect. Compared with the reference engine refitted with infrared radiation suppression module, the engine after cycle optimisation design could obtain better infrared stealth performance.

Real-time flight data from the Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) has been integrated, through a data interface, with a flight performance computer program to predict aviation emissions at altitude. The ADS-B, along with data from Mode-S, are then used to ‘fly’ selected long-range aircraft models (Airbus A380-841, A330-343 and A350-900) and one turboprop (ATR72). Over 2,500 flight trajectories have been processed to demonstrate the integration between databases and software systems. Emissions are calculated for altitudes greater than 3,000 feet (609m) and exclude landing and take-off cycles. This proof of concept fills a gap in the aviation emissions inventories, since it uses real-time flights and produces estimates at a very granular level. It can be used to analyse emissions of gases such as carbon dioxide ($\mathrm{CO}_2$), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides ($\mathrm{NO}_x$) and water vapour on a specific route (city pair), for a specific aircraft, for an entire fleet, or on a seasonal basis. It is shown how $\mathrm{NO}_x$ and water vapour emissions concentrate around tropospheric altitudes only for long-range flights, and that the cruise range is the biggest discriminator in the absolute value of these and other exhaust emissions.

Compression systems of modern, civil aircraft engines consist of three components: Fan, low-pressure compressor (LPC) and high-pressure compressor (HPC). The efficiency of each component has improved over the last decades by means of rising computational power which made high level aerodynamic optimisations possible. Each component has been addressed individually and separated from the effects of upstream and downstream components. But as much time and effort has been spend to improve performance of rotating components, the stationary inter-compressor duct (ICD) has only received minor attention. With the rotating compression components being highly optimised and sophisticated their performance potential is limited. That is why more aggressive, respectively shorter, ICDs get more and more into the focus of research and engine manufacturers. The length reduction offers high weight saving and thus fuel saving potential as a shorter ICD means a reduction in aircraft engine length. This paper aims at evaluating the impact of more aggressive duct geometries on LPC and HPC performance. A multi objective 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) aerodynamic optimisation is performed on a preliminary design of a novel two spool compressor rig incorporating four different operating line and two near-stall (NST) conditions which ensure operability throughout the whole compressor operating range. While the ICD is free to change in length, shape and cross-section area, the blades of LPC and HPC are adjusted for changing duct aerodynamics via profile re-staggering to keep number of free parameters low. With this parametrisation length, reductions for the ICD of up to 40% are feasible while keeping the reduction in isentropic efficiency at aerodynamic design point for the compressor below 1%pt. Three geometries of the Pareto front are analysed in detail focusing on ICD secondary flow behaviour and changes of aerodynamics in LPC and HPC. In order to asses changes in stall margin, speedlines for the three geometries are analysed.

A new aerodynamic open-circuit test rig for studying boundary layer ingestion (BLI) propulsion has been developed by National Research Council of Canada. The purpose is to demonstrate the advantages of BLI in reducing the power required for a given thrust and to validate the performance of BLI fan concepts. The rig consists of a boundary layer generator to simulate boundary layer development over an aircraft fuselage. The boundary layer generator can be used to create a natural boundary layer due to skin friction but also comprises an array of perforated plates through which pressurised air can be blown to manipulate the boundary layer thickness. The size of the boundary layer thickness can be controlled upstream of the fan blades. Parametric studies of boundary layer thickness were then feasible. The test calibration was conducted to validate the concept.

This study presents a methodology to estimate the battery consumption of an electric powerplant, based on brushless motors, typically used in light unmanned aerial systems. The methodology models brushless motors through an equivalent circuit obtained from their dynamic behaviour. Propellers’ data are taken from an experimental database. Furthermore, a variable speed controller efficiency is considered in the methodology. All the parameters involved in the model are adjusted by minimising the mean quadratic error of measurements taken in both direct and alternating currents. This model allows designers to predict energy consumption, also if any element of the powerplant changes, such as battery or propeller. Thus, it is useful for selecting the best powerplant for an actual RPAS operation. The results obtained to predict the current consumption of several electric powerplants show a coefficient of determination higher than 0.96. Finally, the methodology is validated by means of a case study of an actual RPAS, where the best powerplant is selected in terms of endurance.

New alternative jet fuels have provided many advantages in the aviation industry, especially in terms of economics and environment. However, fuel–seal compatibility is one of the major issues that restricts alternative fuel advancement into the market. Thus, to help understand and solve the problem, this study examines the swelling effect of prepared and non-prepared O-rings in different fuels and aromatic species. Stress relaxation experiments were carried out to evaluate seal compatibility under compression, which mimics engine operation conditions. Seals were compressed and immersed in a variety of fuels and their blends for about 90h while maintaining a constant temperature 30°C and constant compression force of 25% seal thickness. The two types of elastomers investigated were fluorosilicone and nitrile O-rings, which are predominantly used in the aviation industry. Meanwhile, three different fuels and aromatic species were utilised as the variables in the experiments. The fuels used were Jet-A1, SPK and SHJFCS, while the aromatic species added were propyl benzene, tetralin and p-xylene. The swelling effects were determined from the P/Po value. Results indicate that Jet-A1 has the highest swelling effect, followed by SHJFCS and SPK. It was observed that the higher the percentage of aromatics in fuel, the higher the rate of swelling. Furthermore, prepared seals had a lower swelling rate than did non-prepared seals. Meanwhile, the intensity of the swelling effect in the Jet-A1-SHJFCS blends was in the order of 60/40, 85/15 and 50/50 blend. The work done in this study will aid in the selection of suitable aromatic species in future fuels. The novelty of this research lies in the determination of the appropriate amount of aromatic content as well as the selection of type of aromatic and its mixture fuel. Moreover, the various proportions of fuel blends with aromatic are investigated. The primary aim of this study is to understand the behaviour of prepared and non-prepared seals, and their compatibility with alternative fuels.

This paper presents a performance analysis on a novel engine concept, currently under development, in order to achieve hybrid air-breathing rocket technology. A component-level approach has been developed to simulate the performance of the engine at Mach 5, and the thermodynamic interaction of the different working fluids has been analysed. The bypass ramjet duct has also been included in the model. This facilitates the improved evaluation of performance parameters. The impact of ram drag induced by the intake of the engine has also been demonstrated. The whole model is introduced into a multi-platform application for aeroengine simulation to make it accessible to the interested reader. Results show that the bypass duct modelling increases the overall efficiency by approximately 7%. The model calculates the specific impulse at approximately 1800 seconds, which is 4 times higher than any chemical rocket.

The complex and iterative workflow for designing the secondary air system (SAS) of a gas turbine engine still largely depends on human expertise and hence requires long lead times and incurs high design time-cost. This paper proposes an automated methodology to generate the whole-engine SAS flow network model from the engine geometry model and presents a convenient and inter-operable framework of the secondary air system modeller. The SAS modeller transforms the SAS cavities and flow paths into a 1D flow network model composed of nodes and links. The novel, object-oriented pre-processor embedded in the SAS modeller automatically assembles the conservation equations for all flow nodes and the loss correlations for all links. The twin-level, hierarchical SAS solver then solves the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy supplemented with the correlations in the loss model library. The modelling swiftness, mathematical robustness and numerical stability of the present methodology are demonstrated through the results obtained from IP compressor rotor drum flow network model.
