Although an interest in electric propulsion has existedin the UK for a considerable time, it is only in thepast few years that it has been consideredworthwhile to undertake the development of hardwareand produce detailed systems studies. The practicaldevelopments can be divided into two categories: —

  1. 1. Thedevelopment of comparatively large thrusters (inthe region of ½ kW power, giving 10-20 milliNewtons of thrust), for producing major movementsin a satellite'sposition.

  2. 2. Thedevelopment of micro-thruster systems for themaintenance of a satellite's attitude and positionagainst the small disturbing forces and torques itnormally experiences inorbit.
