from Part I - Historical Antecedents and Overview of the Century
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 22 February 2020
Throughout the twentieth century, the Church in Wales functioned alongside other Christian denominations in the service of the people of Wales. However, the disestablishment campaign was characterised by two different visions of relations between church and state. These competed with each other for ascendancy, often in conditions of acrimony, particularly with regard to disendowment. and matters of status and class. Across the century, though, often the Church in Wales and nonconformity seem to be oblivious to one other, happily working for their own constituencies and values. Yet, as the century progresses, there is greater evidence of denominational cooperation and partnership rooted in a common Christian commitment and a shared sense of mission to an ever-evolving Wales.
