We explore the relationship between (3-isogeny induced) Selmer group of an elliptic curve and the (3 part of) the ideal class group, over certain non-abelian number fields.

Let p be a fixed prime number, and let F be a global function field with characteristic not equal to p. In this article, we shall study the variation properties of the Sylow p-subgroups of the even K-groups in a p-adic Lie extension of F. When the p-adic Lie extension is assumed to contain the cyclotomic $\mathbb {Z}_p$-extension of F, we obtain growth estimate of these groups. We also establish a duality between the direct limit and inverse limit of the even K-groups.

For a prime p and a rational elliptic curve $E_{/\mathbb {Q}}$, set $K=\mathbb {Q}(E[p])$ to denote the torsion field generated by $E[p]:=\operatorname {ker}\{E\xrightarrow {p} E\}$. The class group $\operatorname {Cl}_K$ is a module over $\operatorname {Gal}(K/\mathbb {Q})$. Given a fixed odd prime number p, we study the average nonvanishing of certain Galois stable quotients of the mod-p class group $\operatorname {Cl}_K/p\operatorname {Cl}_K$. Here, E varies over all rational elliptic curves, ordered according to height. Our results are conditional, since we assume that the p-primary part of the Tate–Shafarevich group is finite. Furthermore, we assume predictions made by Delaunay for the statistical variation of the p-primary parts of Tate–Shafarevich groups. We also prove results in the case when the elliptic curve $E_{/\mathbb {Q}}$ is fixed and the prime p is allowed to vary.

We prove a comparison theorem between Greenberg–Benois $\mathcal {L}$-invariants and Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariants. Such a comparison theorem supplies an affirmative answer to a speculation of Besser–de Shalit.

The tame Gras–Munnier Theorem gives a criterion for the existence of a $ {\mathbb Z}/p{\mathbb Z} $-extension of a number field K ramified at exactly a tame set S of places of K, the finite $v \in S$ necessarily having norm $1$ mod p. The criterion is the existence of a nontrivial dependence relation on the Frobenius elements of these places in a certain governing extension. We give a short new proof which extends the theorem by showing the subset of elements of $H^1(G_S,{\mathbb {Z}}/p{\mathbb {Z}})$ giving rise to such extensions of K has the same cardinality as the set of these dependence relations. We then reprove the key Proposition 2.2 using the more sophisticated Greenberg–Wiles formula based on global duality.

Let p be a prime. In this paper, we use techniques from Iwasawa theory to study questions about rank jump of elliptic curves in cyclic extensions of degree p. We also study growth of the p-primary Selmer group and the Shafarevich–Tate group in cyclic degree-p extensions and improve upon previously known results in this direction.

Romyar Sharifi has constructed a map $\varpi _M$ from the first homology of the modular curve $X_1(M)$ to the K-group $K_2(\operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbf {Z}}}[\zeta _M+\zeta _M^{-1}, \frac {1}{M}]) \otimes \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbf {Z}}}[1/2]$, where $\zeta _M$ is a primitive Mth root of unity. Sharifi conjectured that $\varpi _M$ is annihilated by a certain Eisenstein ideal. Fukaya and Kato proved this conjecture after tensoring with $\operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbf {Z}}}_p$ for a prime $p\geq 5$ dividing M. More recently, Sharifi and Venkatesh proved the conjecture for Hecke operators away from M. In this note, we prove two main results. First, we give a relation between $\varpi _M$ and $\varpi _{M'}$ when $M' \mid M$. Our method relies on the techniques developed by Sharifi and Venkatesh. We then use this result in combination with results of Fukaya and Kato in order to get the Eisenstein property of $\varpi _M$ for Hecke operators of index dividing M.

Given a profinite group G of finite p-cohomological dimension and a pro-p quotient H of G by a closed normal subgroup N, we study the filtration on the Iwasawa cohomology of N by powers of the augmentation ideal in the group algebra of H. We show that the graded pieces are related to the cohomology of G via analogues of Bockstein maps for the powers of the augmentation ideal. For certain groups H, we relate the values of these generalized Bockstein maps to Massey products relative to a restricted class of defining systems depending on H. We apply our study to prove lower bounds on the p-ranks of class groups of certain nonabelian extensions of $\mathbb {Q}$ and to give a new proof of the vanishing of Massey triple products in Galois cohomology.

Let $p$ be a prime number. Kęstutis Česnavičius proved that for an abelian variety $A$ over a global field $K$, the $p$-Selmer group $\mathrm {Sel}_{p}(A/L)$ grows unboundedly when $L$ ranges over the $(\mathbb {Z}/p\mathbb {Z})$-extensions of $K$. Moreover, he raised a further problem: is $\dim _{\mathbb {F}_{p}} \text{III} (A/L) [p]$ also unbounded under the above conditions? In this paper, we give a positive answer to this problem in the case $p \neq \mathrm {char}\,K$. As an application, this result enables us to generalize the work of Clark, Sharif and Creutz on the growth of potential $\text{III}$ in cyclic extensions. We also answer a problem proposed by Lim and Murty concerning the growth of the fine Tate–Shafarevich groups.

Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves over noncommutative $GL(2)$ extension has been a fruitful area of research. Over such a noncommutative p-adic Lie extension, there exists a structure theorem providing the structure of the dual Selmer groups for elliptic curves in terms of reflexive ideals in the Iwasawa algebra. The central object of this article is to study Iwasawa theory over the $PGL(2)$ extension and connect it with Iwasawa theory over the $GL(2)$ extension, deriving consequences to the structure theorem when the reflexive ideal is the augmentation ideal of the center. We also show how the dual Selmer group over the $GL(2)$ extension being torsion is related with that of the $PGL(2)$ extension.

A result of Bleher, Chinburg, Greenberg, Kakde, Pappas, Sharifi and Taylor has initiated the topic of higher codimension Iwasawa theory. As a generalization of the classical Iwasawa main conjecture, they prove a relationship between analytic objects (a pair of Katz’s $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions) and algebraic objects (two ‘everywhere unramified’ Iwasawa modules) involving codimension two cycles in a $2$-variable Iwasawa algebra. We prove a result by considering the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field $K$ (where an odd prime $p$ splits) of an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, with good supersingular reduction at $p$. On the analytic side, we consider eight pairs of $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions in this setup (four of the $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions have been constructed by Loeffler and a fifth $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-function is due to Hida). On the algebraic side, we consider modifications of fine Selmer groups over the $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{2}$-extension of $K$. We also provide numerical evidence, using algorithms of Pollack, towards a pseudonullity conjecture of Coates–Sujatha.

We give an algebraic proof of a class number formula for dihedral extensions of number fields of degree 2q, where q is any odd integer. Our formula expresses the ratio of class numbers as a ratio of orders of cohomology groups of units and allows one to recover similar formulas which have appeared in the literature. As a corollary of our main result, we obtain explicit bounds on the (finitely many) possible values which can occur as ratio of class numbers in dihedral extensions. Such bounds are obtained by arithmetic means, without resorting to deep integral representation theory.

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication. Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime in $\mathbb{Q}$ and suppose that $E$ has good ordinary reduction at $p$. We study the dual Selmer group of $E$ over the compositum of the $\text{GL}_{2}$ extension and the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension of an imaginary quadratic extension as an Iwasawa module.

A number field K with a ring of integers 𝒪K is called a Pólya field, if the 𝒪K-module of integer-valued polynomials on 𝒪K has a regular basis, or equivalently all its Bhargava factorial ideals are principal [1]. We generalize Leriche's criterion [8] for Pólya-ness of Galois closures of pure cubic fields, to general S3-extensions of ℚ. Also, we prove for a real (resp. imaginary) Pólya S3-extension L of ℚ, at most four (resp. three) primes can be ramified. Moreover, depending on the solvability of unit norm equation over the quadratic subfield of L, we determine when these sharp upper bounds can occur.

Let $p$ be a prime and let $G$ be a finite group. By a celebrated theorem of Swan, two finitely generated projective $\mathbb{Z}_{p}[G]$-modules $P$ and $P^{\prime }$ are isomorphic if and only if $\mathbb{Q}_{p}\otimes _{\mathbb{Z}_{p}}P$ and $\mathbb{Q}_{p}\otimes _{\mathbb{Z}_{p}}P^{\prime }$ are isomorphic as $\mathbb{Q}_{p}[G]$-modules. We prove an Iwasawa-theoretic analogue of this result and apply this to the Iwasawa theory of local and global fields. We thereby determine the structure of natural Iwasawa modules up to (pseudo-)isomorphism.

We investigate the Galois structures of $p$-adic cohomology groups of general $p$-adic representations over finite extensions of number fields. We show, in particular, that as the field extensions vary over natural families the Galois modules formed by these cohomology groups always decompose as the direct sum of a projective module and a complementary module of bounded $p$-rank. We use this result to derive new (upper and lower) bounds on the changes in ranks of Selmer groups over extensions of number fields and descriptions of the explicit Galois structures of natural arithmetic modules.

Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a field containing a root of unity of order $p$ . We relate recent results on vanishing of triple Massey products in the $\bmod-p $ Galois cohomology of $F$ , due to Hopkins, Wickelgren, Mináč, and Tân, to classical results in the theory of central simple algebras. We prove a stronger form of the vanishing property for global fields.

Let $p$ be an odd prime. We study the variation of the $p$ -rank of the Selmer groups ofAbelian varieties with complex multiplication in certain towers of number fields.

For an odd prime p we prove a Riemann-Hurwitz type formula for odd eigenspaces of the standard Iwasawa modules over F(μp∞), the field obtained from a totally real number field F by adjoining all p-power roots of unity. We use a new approach based on the relationship between eigenspaces and étale cohomology groups over the cyclotomic ℤp-extension F∞ of F. The systematic use of étale cohomology greatly simplifies the proof and allows to generalize the classical result about the minus-eigenspace to all odd eigenspaces.

We derive a formula for Greenberg’s L-invariant of Tate twists of the symmetric sixth power of an ordinary non-CM cuspidal newform of weight ≥4, under some technical assumptions. This requires a ‘sufficiently rich’ Galois deformation of the symmetric cube, which we obtain from the symmetric cube lift to GSp(4)/Q of Ramakrishnan–Shahidi and the Hida theory of this group developed by Tilouine–Urban. The L-invariant is expressed in terms of derivatives of Frobenius eigenvalues varying in the Hida family. Our result suggests that one could compute Greenberg’s L-invariant of all symmetric powers by using appropriate functorial transfers and Hida theory on higher rank groups.
