DNA methylation plays a crucial role in gene regulation and has been implicated in various neuropsychiatric disorders, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). The rs27072 polymorphism within the SLC6A3 gene has been studied in addictive disorders; however, its role in epigenetic modifications remains unclear. This study investigates the methylation levels of CpG sites near rs27072 and their potential associations with AUD, personality traits, and environmental stressors.
Materials and methods
One hundred twenty-four male participants (66 patients with AUD and 58 controls) were analyzed for DNA methylation at CpG islands proximal to the rs27072 locus. The personality traits and life stress events were assessed in all participants.
Results
AUD patients had a lower methylation level than healthy controls (p = 0.003 for total average). However, the results changed to borderline significance after adjusting for clinical covariates in the analysis (p = 0.042), and the genotype at rs27072 did not modulate the methylation levels. There is high novelty seeking (p < 0.001), and more bad life events in patients with AUD than healthy controls (p < 0.001). Additionally, no significant correlations were found between methylation levels and personality traits or life stress scores (p > 0.05).
Conclusions
The methylation of the SLC6A3 gene may be marginally associated with AUD; however, the rs27072 genotype, personality, and life stress may not be directly linked to epigenetic modifications. Cross-sectional epigenetic studies may not establish causality; future studies with larger, more diverse cohorts and longitudinal designs are warranted to elucidate the complex interplay in AUD pathophysiology.
This study documents several correlations observed during the first run of the plasma wakefield acceleration experiment E300 conducted at FACET-II, using a single drive electron bunch. The established correlations include those between the measured maximum energy loss of the drive electron beam and the integrated betatron X-ray signal, the calculated total beam energy deposited in the plasma and the integrated X-ray signal, among three visible light emission measuring cameras and between the visible plasma light and X-ray signal. The integrated X-ray signal correlates almost linearly with both the maximum energy loss of the drive beam and the energy deposited into the plasma, demonstrating its usability as a measure of energy transfer from the drive beam to the plasma. Visible plasma light is found to be a useful indicator of the presence of a wake at three locations that overall are two metres apart. Despite the complex dynamics and vastly different time scales, the X-ray radiation from the drive bunch and visible light emission from the plasma may prove to be effective non-invasive diagnostics for monitoring the energy transfer from the beam to the plasma in future high-repetition-rate experiments.
Accumulating evidence suggests that alterations in inflammatory biomarkers are important in depression. However, previous meta-analyses disagree on these associations, and errors in data extraction may account for these discrepancies.
Methods
PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library were searched from database inception to 14 January 2020. Meta-analyses of observational studies examining the association between depression and levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin 1-β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were eligible. Errors were classified as follows: incorrect sample sizes, incorrectly used standard deviation, incorrect participant inclusion, calculation error, or analysis with insufficient data. We determined their impact on the results after correction thereof.
Results
Errors were noted in 14 of the 15 meta-analyses included. Across 521 primary studies, 118 (22.6%) showed the following errors: incorrect sample sizes (20 studies, 16.9%), incorrect use of standard deviation (35 studies, 29.7%), incorrect participant inclusion (7 studies, 5.9%), calculation errors (33 studies, 28.0%), and analysis with insufficient data (23 studies, 19.5%). After correcting these errors, 11 (29.7%) out of 37 pooled effect sizes changed by a magnitude of more than 0.1, ranging from 0.11 to 1.15. The updated meta-analyses showed that elevated levels of TNF- α, IL-6, CRP, but not IL-1β, are associated with depression.
Conclusions
These findings show that data extraction errors in meta-analyses can impact findings. Efforts to reduce such errors are important in studies of the association between depression and peripheral inflammatory biomarkers, for which high heterogeneity and conflicting results have been continuously reported.
This article examines the earliest examples of replication of bronze objects of complicated structure in China. It uses four quadrupeds from the Freer Gallery (National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution), the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the British Museum, and the Yūrinkan Museum in Kyōto as examples to illustrate the complex technology required in replicating bronzes. It provides evidence to define identical bronzes and proves that the four quadrupeds shared the same decorated model. The application of section-mold casting, spacers, clay cores, and mold section assemblage will be examined using 3D scanning, X-ray photography, computerized tomography (CT) scanning, and alloy composition analysis.
To determine how the movement of patients, equipment, materials, staff, and door openings within the operating room (OR) affect microbial loads at various locations within the OR.
DESIGN
Observation and sampling study.
SETTING
Academic health center, public hospital.
METHODS
We first analyzed 27 videotaped procedures to determine the areas in the OR with high and low numbers of people in transit. We then placed air samplers and settle plates in representative locations during 21 procedures in 4 different ORs during 2 different seasons of the year to measure microbial load in colony-forming units (CFU). The temperature and humidity, number of door openings, physical movement, and the number of people in the OR were measured for each procedure. Statistical analysis was conducted using hierarchical regression.
RESULTS
The microbial load was affected by the time of year that the samples were taken. Both microbial load measured by the air samplers and by settle plates in 1 area of the OR was correlated with the physical movement of people in the same area but not with the number of door openings and the number of people in the OR.
CONCLUSIONS
Movement in the OR is correlated with the microbial load. Establishing operational guidelines or developing OR layouts that focus on minimizing movement by incorporating desirable internal storage points and workstations can potentially reduce microbial load, thereby potentially reducing surgical site infection risk.
The National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke-Canadian Stroke Network (NINDS-CSN) 5-minute neuropsychology protocol consists of only verbal tasks, and is proposed as a brief screening method for vascular cognitive impairment. We evaluated its feasibility within two weeks after stroke and ability to predict the development of post-stroke dementia (PSD) at 3 months after stroke.
Method:
We prospectively enrolled subjects with ischemic stroke within seven days of symptom onset who were consecutively admitted to 12 university hospitals. Neuropsychological assessments using the NINDS-CSN 5-minute and 60-minute neuropsychology protocols were administered within two weeks and at 3 months after stroke onset, respectively. PSD was diagnosed with reference to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association statement, requiring deficits in at least two cognitive domains.
Results:
Of 620 patients, 512 (82.6%) were feasible for the NINDS-CSN 5-minute protocol within two weeks after stroke. The incidence of PSD was 16.2% in 308 subjects who had completed follow-up at 3 months after stroke onset. The total score of the NINDS-CSN 5-minute protocol differed significantly between those with and without PSD (4.0 ± 2.7, 7.4 ± 2.7, respectively; p < 0.01). A cut-off value of 6/7 showed reasonable discriminative power (sensitivity 0.82, specificity 0.67, AUC 0.74). The NINDS-CSN 5-minute protocol score was a significant predictor for PSD (adjusted odds ratio 6.32, 95% CI 2.65–15.05).
Discussion:
The NINDS-CSN 5-minute protocol is feasible to evaluate cognitive functions in patients with acute ischemic stroke. It might be a useful screening method for early identification of high-risk groups for PSD.
Conus medullaris syndrome (CMS) is a clinical neurologic syndrome caused by a conus medullaris lesion. CMS is a heterogeneous entity with various etiologies such as trauma or a space-occupying lesion. Multiple cases of CMS following spinal anesthesia have been reported, but CMS after radioisotope (RI) cisternography has not yet been reported.
Methods:
We present four patients who developed CMS after RI cisternography.
Results:
All experienced neurological deficits such as paraparesis, sensory loss, and urinary incontinence three to four days after RI cisternography. Two showed abnormalities on lumbar magnetic resonance imaging, and three had complete symptom resolution within ten weeks.
Conclusions:
The pathomechanism of the CMS is unclear, but we hypothesize that RI neurotoxicity might be responsible. It is possible that the use of low-dose 99mTc-DTPA or an alternative diagnostic tool such as magnetic resonance cisternography could help to prevent this complication.
Tardive Tourette‐like syndrome is recognised by the observation of several motor and vocal tics often in individuals receiving psychotropic medications and can happen within 1–3 months of treatment.
Clinical case
We report a case which is unique in its onset of Tardive Tourette‐like syndrome comprising of vocal, motor tics and coprolalia after more than three decades of treatment with combination depot and oral neuroleptics.
Discussion
Use of the Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale indicates a probable relationship between the onset of Tardive Tourettism and the antipsychotic therapy in this patient. This was in contrast to earlier reports which noted earlier onset and partial reversal with termination or change of medications. Clinicians need to pay heed to the emergence of late‐onset Tourettism in order to better manage its manifestation and prevent its worsening in the context of holistic care for patients with neuropsychiatric conditions including schizophrenia.
For repeat transactions data from monthly auction hammer prices, we analyze the level and quality of Bordeaux wine returns using the Fama-French Three-Factor Model and the Capital Asset Pricing Model. Returns average up to 0.75% per month above those predicted by these models. Further, investment grade wines benefit from low exposure to market risk factors, thus offering a valuable dimension of portfolio diversification. These findings are consistent with simple theoretical considerations and support a documented growing interest in wine investments (JEL Classification: G11.G12).
A simple and efficient approach for fabricating silicon nanopillar arrays with a high aspect ratio and controllable sidewall profiles has been developed by using holographic lithography and a novel single-step deep reactive ion etching. During the etching process, scalloping of the sidewalls can be avoided while reserving the high mask selectivity and high etching rate. Besides, the sidewall angle of resultant patterns can be adjusted by tuning the composition of the gas mixture of single-step DRIE process. We further fabricate a tapered silicon nanopillar array and observe its photonic bandgap property. We believe that the good optical performance of this tapered silicon nanopillar array realized by the proposed approach shows the promising of this process for various applications.
Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were synthesized by both high-density plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and thermal CVD. The growth in the former was carried out in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) reactor. The multilayer loop structure, which was reported to be found on both the inner and outer surfaces of cup-stacked-type CNFs grown using thermal CVD only after heat treatment above 1500 °C, was observed in the as-grown CNFs only on the outer surface using ICP-CVD. The dangling bonds caused by plasma etching and the bonding between edge carbon atoms aided by the high-density plasma are considered the main reasons of the formation of multilayer loops.
The remarkable link between the structure of the white noise and that of the infinite dimensional rotation group has been exemplified by various approaches in probability theory and harmonic analysis. Such a link naturally becomes more intricate as the dimension of the time-parameter space of the white noise increases. One of the powerful method to illustrate this situation is to observe the structure of certain subgroups of the infinite dimensional rotation group that come from the diffeomorphisms of the time-parameter space, that is the time change. Indeed, those subgroups would shed light on the probabilistic meanings hidden behind the usual formal observations. Moreover, the subgroups often describe the way of dependency for Gaussian random fields formed from the white noise as the time-parameter runs over the basic parameter space.
The main purpose of this note is to introduce finite dimensional subgroups of the infinite dimensional rotation group that have important probabilistic meanings and to discuss their roles in probability theory. In particular, we shall see that the conformal invariance of white noise can be described in terms of the conformal group which is a finite dimensional Lie subgroup of the infinite dimensional rotation group.
One of the authors discussed the best non-linear predictor of the process X(t) = f(U(t)), which is obtained by transforming an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process U(t) with a measurable function f(u) (see [5]).
We shall discuss in this paper some problems in non-linear prediction theory. An Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process {U(t)} is taken to be a basic process, and we shall deal with stochastic processes X(t) that are transformed by functions f satisfying certain condition. Actually, observed processes are expressed in the form X(t) = f(U(t)). Our main problem is to obtain the best non-linear predictor X̂(t, τ) for X(t + τ), τ > 0, assuming that X(s), s ≤t, are observed. The predictor is therefore a non-linear functional of the values X(s), s ≤ t.
