Many instructors face challenges in engaging students in lecturecourses. In the fall of 2004, we incorporated innovative, real-timepolling technology into an upper-division political science courseon Public Opinion. The polling technology channeled students'technological savvy in the service of several pedagogical goals. Thetechnology increased student engagement and reinforced the substanceof the course material. It also provided students with topicallyrelevant experiences in answering survey questions and allowedstudents to feel more comfortable in expressing their opinionsduring discussions. We thank VictoriaCross, James Fowler, Ethan Scheiner, Walter Stone, and ElizabethZechmeister for helpful suggestions. Funding for the technologywas generously provided by the Undergraduate InstructionalImprovement Program, supported by the vice provost–undergraduatestudies at the University of California, Davis.
