This practical book offers in-depth explorations of the pathophysiology of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), risk factors for its development, strategies for prevention, approaches to diagnosis and management, and general principles of ICU survivorship and aftercare, accompanied by case studies and personal perspectives from survivors of critical illness and their loved ones. An international, interprofessional group of experts covers key topics, including delirium, ICU-acquired weakness, and other hazards of hospitalization; the ABCDEF bundle, ICU diaries, and family-centred care; ICU follow-up clinics and peer support programs; and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies and therapeutic interventions both in and after the hospital. Special populations, including older adults, children, those with long-COVID syndrome, and survivors of neurological injury and cardiac arrest are also discussed. The book is essential reading for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals caring for this patient population and serves as a detailed reference to help patients with PICS better understand the condition.
For decades, psychiatry has focused on initiating treatment—which medication to prescribe, in what dose, and for how long. But what happens when treatment needs to stop? How a medication is stopped is just as important as how it is started, and abrupt discontinuation can lead to unnecessary suffering, relapse, and often preventable withdrawal symptoms. Based on the principles of the bestselling Stahl's Prescriber's Guide, this essential resource provides user-friendly guidance on deprescribing or switching psychotropic medications safely and effectively. 64 medications are presented in a consistent format to facilitate rapid access to deprescribing information. Divided into color coded sections, the book allows the reader to identify key details about when and why to deprescribe, the risks and mechanisms of withdrawal, tapering protocols, cross-titration strategies, and how to distinguish withdrawal symptoms from relapse. Evidence-based recommendations and expert clinical insights make this a must-have manual for all psychiatric prescribers.
Despite increasing global respect for disability rights since the 2008 entry into force of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the equal right to live in the world for disabled people continues to be undermined. This undermining stems from a range of factors, not least the selective prevention and termination of disabled lives, along with long-standing barriers to life-sustaining care, including restricted access to controlled substances and experimental treatment. Investigating the problem of disability discrimination at the margins of life and death, Tony Bogdanoski draws on a range of materials, including international human rights law, reports of UN treaty monitoring bodies and special rapporteurs, and laws largely from the US, UK, and Canada to explore how selective reproduction, assisted dying, and drug control impact struggles for disability equality. His insights are broad in consequence, spanning the fields of disability studies, human rights, law, and bioethics.

This succinct and evidence-based resource is essential reading for those seeking to develop and implement global suicide prevention strategies.
This book offers a moral and political analysis of the social position of people living with dementia. It takes a relational egalitarian view on the demands of justice, reflecting on what would be required for our society to become one in which we relate to members of this group as equals. By making several contributions to the legal and political philosophy of dementia care, the author uses a novel framework to underpin several public policy recommendations, aimed at remedying the injustices those living with the condition face. Whilst doing so, she takes care not to overlook the legislative and economic barriers to achieving an ideal, dementia-inclusive society, and considers ways in which they might be overcome. Providing public policy insights while furthering scholarship on justice, equality, and capability, this is a timely and novel book that speaks to some of the most urgent questions facing contemporary ageing societies.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of early diagnosis and tailored treatment plans. Flow diagrams summarizing the management of cerebral infections are also provided in this Element.
Stillbirth, especially unpredicted losses in the antepartum period defined as intrauterine fetal demise after twenty weeks gestation, remains sadly a too common event during pregnancy. Dr. Gandhi and Professor Reddy detail the epidemiology and review the impact of proactive interventions both in preparation for and during pregnancy to lower stillbirth rates. The clinical management of a pregnancy affected by this tragedy. The authors address a growing understanding of causes seen clinically and those unseen (e.g. genetic abnormalities, viral infection, fetal hypoxia in a normally grown fetus, etc). The detailed approach to stillbirth during the index pregnancy seeks to maximize the discovery of the underlying causes to provide solace to the grieving family and to prepare for any additions to prenatal care for any subsequent pregnancies.
Delivering safe, high-quality care needs a competent and capable workforce, particularly as clinical practices change with scientific and technical advances. Structured learning opportunities are a central approach to building and maintaining competencies, but ineffective training wastes the scarce resources and staff time. This Element provides a review of education and training design, implementation, and evaluation methods used in healthcare improvement. Drawing from the general learning sciences and healthcare education and training literatures, the authors describe five pillars of effective training. For each pillar, they provide actionable guidance based on the best available evidence. Three examples of quality and safety programmes are given to illustrate the positive impact of well-designed training, and the challenges of good training design in healthcare improvement. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Most people who develop dementia will never be diagnosed, and therefore lack access to treatment and care from specialists in the field. This new edition provides updated guidance on how behavioral symptom reflect the changes occurring in the brain, and how these can help generalist clinicians to accurately diagnose neurodegenerative diseases. This practical book is aimed at healthcare professionals working in neurology, psychiatry and neuropsychology wanting to enhance the skills and knowledge needed to successfully manage these diseases. Simple approaches to bedside mental status testing, differential diagnosis and treatment, and interpreting neuropsychological testing and neuroimaging findings are covered. Introductory chapters outline dementia epidemiology and dementia neuropathology whilst chapters new to this edition describe the improvements in diagnostic capabilities in recent years, including blood based and cerebrospinal biomarkers and emerging biologically based therapies. Chapters on sleep disorders, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy and traumatic brain injury have also been expanded.
There are many different types of decisions – from the important and life-changing to the mundane and everyday – but all are important for our functioning as humans. The perfect introduction for medical researchers, epidemiologists, public health practitioners, and health service researchers, this book describes how to preform and interpret multivariable analysis, using plain language rather than mathematical formulae. It takes advantage of the availability of user-friendly software that allow novices to conduct complex analysis without programming experience; ensuring that these analyses are set up and interpreted correctly. Numerous tables, graphs, and tips help to demystify the process of performing multivariable analysis. The text is illustrated with many up-to-date examples from the published literature that enable readers to model their analyses after well conducted research, increasing chances of top-tier publication.
Cardiac disease complicating pregnancy is present in a relatively small number of women; however, it accounts for a disproportionate share of maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in developing/emerging countries. The prevalence of cardiac disease in pregnancy is increasing and there are multiple underlying etiologies with wide-ranging severity. Normal adaptions during pregnancy often further challenge already compromised anatomic and physiologic compensatory mechanisms of the cardiovascular system, increasing the risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. In this Element, the authors describe how these changes alter nonpregnant physiology with a variety of preexisting and newly diagnosed cardiac conditions. Maternal and fetal risks are reviewed. Diagnosis and management, from before conception through the postpartum period including appropriate contraception, is discussed. The goal of this review is to increase understanding of the importance of cardiac disease in pregnancy and encourage high-quality multidisciplinary care, and thus improve maternal and fetal outcomes.
