The Pan-STARRS telescopes, located on Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii, are conducting a long-term search of the night sky for Near-Earth Objects. The Pan-STARRS survey is now one of the leading NEO surveys, accounting for more than 40% of all new NEO discoveries, and over 50% of discoveries of larger NEOs. Pan-STARRS is also a prolific comet discovery telescope, and discovered the first interstellar object, ‘Oumuamua.

Comets and asteroids collision with Earth and other planets is part of the continued planetary formation, the other part is the solar wind delivers water and gasses back to the Kuiper Belt from the planets, together they form the solar hydrologic cycle. The new theory of solar hydrologic cycle provides that solar wind stripping water and gasses from the inner planets, while having diminished effect on outer planets, is the cause for outer planets becoming gas giants. Jupiter, having the smallest orbit among outer planets, is destined to be the predominant planet and plays a critical role in complex life evolution on Earth. Jupiter grows mass by locking up comet mass, thus reducing the number of comet collisions to Earth. Reduced hydrogen infusion from comets enabled Earth’s atmosphere transitioning from hydrogen to oxygen rich. The transition trajectories of Jupiter mass gain and Earth water and gasses mass fluctuation are calibrated using known geological events. Earth’s trajectory can be divided into three periods, Hydrogen, Carbon Dioxide, and Oxygen, named after predominant gas in Earth’s atmosphere for the period. Complex life only flourishes in the Oxygen Period, when aerobic metabolism is possible. Mass extinction can be caused by cometary hydrogen infusion that incinerates atmospheric oxygen. Probability of such astronomical hazards is declining as outer planets have locked up most comets and will continue to absorb more comets. Earth is safer than ever, and will become even safer, as dictated by the solar water cycle. The physics of the solar hydrologic cycle is universally true, life should be universal phenomena.

The solar hydrologic cycle is the process of comets delivering water and gasses to the planets by collision, and solar wind stripping water and gasses from the planets and delivering them back to the Kuiper Belt. This new theory of solar hydrologic cycle provides that the solar hydrologic cycle is the continuation of planetary formation, and the cause of outer planets becoming gas giants, inner planets staying small rocks.

Beginning with loose aggregations of dust particles coated with heterogeneous ices under vacuum at Kuiper Belt temperatures, moving to Jupiter/Saturn distances and eventually to low-perihelion orbit, we consider the likely development of the gaseous phase within a cometary nucleus over the course of its lifetime. From the perspective of physical chemistry, we consider limits on the spatial and temporal distribution and composition of this gaseous phase. The implications of the gaseous phase for heat transfer and for the possible spatial and temporal development of liquid phases are calculated. We conclude that the likely temperatures, pressures, and compositions beneath the outer crust of typical cometary nuclei are such that fluidised phases can exist at significant depths and that these reservoirs give a coherent explanation for the high-intensity outbursts observed from cometary nuclei at large distances from perihelion.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered as plausible carriers for the extended red emission (ERE), a photoluminescent process associated with a wide variety of interstellar environments, as well as for broad emission band features seen in cometary spectra. We report the absorption spectra of phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pentacene, pyrene, chrysene and triphenylene isolated at 10 K in solid argon matrices together with laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra at 355 nm of matrix-isolated anthracene and fluoranthene. LIF spectra are compared with the UV/blue fluorescence spectra of the Red Rectangle Nebula (RR). The LIF spectra measured in solid Ar matrices have been shifted to the predicted position of the PAH band emission in the gas phase for comparison with the astronomical observations (Fig. 1).

Cometary nuclei consist of aggregates of interstellar dust particles less than ~1 μm in diameter and can produce rocky dust particles as a result of the sublimation of ice as comets enter the inner solar system. Samples of fine-grained particles known as chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles (CP-IDPs), possibly from comets, have been collected from the Earth's stratosphere. Owing to their fine-grained texture, these particles were previously thought to be condensates formed directly from interstellar gas. However, coarse-grained chondrule-like objects have recently been observed in samples from comet 81P/Wild 2. The chondrule-like objects are chemically distinct from chondrules in meteoritic chondrites, possessing higher MnO contents (0.5 wt%) in olivine and low-Ca pyroxene. In this study, we analyzed AMM samples by secondary electron microscopy and backscattered electron images for textural observations and compositional analysis. We identified thirteen AMMs with characteristics similar to those of the 81P/Wild 2 samples, and believe that recognition of these similarities necessitates reassessment of the existing models of chondrule formation.

It is shown, that the explosion of the bolide above the Mediterranean sea on July, 6th 2002 with a high probability was a fragment of an icy cometary nucleus which initial weight was equal approximately to 7 ⋅ 108 grams. This follows from the determined energy of the outburst equal to 26kT of TNT (Brown et al. 2002). We think that this energy refers to the height of the maximal braking of the body in the Earth's atmosphere. At the speed of 20.3 km/s accepted by authors, the weight of a body at this height is equal 5 ⋅ 108 gr, and at the entrance in the atmosphere it was approximately of 7 ⋅ 108 gr.

We present the visible spectrum of asteroid-comet transition object 133P/Elst-Pizarro (7968), the first member of the new population of objects called Main Belt Comets (Hsieh & Jewitt 2006). The spectrum was obtained with the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope at the “Roque de los Muchachos” observatory. The orbital elements of 133P place it within the Themis collisional family, but the observed cometary activity during it last 3 perihelion passages also suggest a possible origin in the trans-Neptunian belt or the Oort Cloud, the known sources of comets. We found a clear similarity between our spectrum of 133P and those of other members of the Themis family such as 62 Erato, and a strong contrast with those of cometary nuclei, such as 162P/Siding-Spring. This spectral comparison leads us to conclude that 133P is unlikely to have a cometary origin. This conclusion is strengthened by spectral similarities with activated near-Earth asteroid 3200 Phaethon, and suggest that there are activated asteroids in the near-Earth asteroid and main belt populations with similar surface properties.

The large numbers of nucleus fragments observed are a spectacular illustration of the process of cascading fragmentation in progress, a concept introduced to interpret the properties of the Kreutz system of sungrazers and comet D/1993 F2. The objective is to describe the fragmentation sequence and hierarchy of comet 73P, the nature of the fragmentation process and observed events, and the expected future evolution of this comet. The orbital arc populated by the fragments refers to an interval of 3.74 days in the perihelion time. This result suggests that they all could be products (but not necessarily first-generation fragments) of two 1995 events, in early September (involving an enormous outburst) and at the beginning of November. The interval of perihelion times is equivalent to a range of about 2.5 m/s in separation velocity or 0.00012 the Sun's attraction in nongravitational deceleration. Their combined effect suggests minor orbital momentum changes acquired during fragmentation and decelerations compatible with survival over two revolutions about the Sun. Fragment B is a likely first-generation product of one of the 1995 events. From the behavior of the primary fragment C, 73P is not a dying comet, even though fragment B and others were episodically breaking up into many pieces. Each episode began with the sudden appearance of a starlike nucleus condensation and a rapidly expanding outburst, followed by a development of jets, and a gradual tailward extension of the fading condensation, until the discrete masses embedded in it could be resolved. In April-May, this debris traveled first to the southwest, but models show their eventual motion toward the projected orbit. Fainter fragments were imaged over limited time, apparently because of their erratic activity (interspersed with periods of dormancy) rather than improptu disintegration. A dust trail joining the fragments and reminiscent of comet 141P/Machholz suggests that cascading fragmentation exerts itself profoundly over an extremely broad mass range of particulate debris.

Within the near-Earth object population, one finds asteroids, comets, and meteorites thereby placing the NEO population at the center of the ACM conference. The longstanding gulf between the spectral properties of S-type asteroids and ordinary chondrite meteorites appears to be bridged, where the observational data are consistent with a space weathering type process. As much as 30% of the entire NEO population may reside in orbits having a Jovian Tisserand parameter <30, and among these roughly half are observed to have comet-like physical properties in terms of their albedos and spectra (taxonomy). Thus 15±5% of the entire NEO population may be comprised by extinct or dormant comets.

Impact craters contain ecosystems that are often very different from the ecosystems that surround them. On Earth over 150 impact craters have been identified in a wide diversity of biomes. All natural events that can cause localized disruption of ecosystems have quite distinct patterns of recovery. Impact events are unique in that they are the only extraterrestrial mechanism capable of disrupting an ecosystem locally in space and time. Thus, elucidating the chronological sequence of change at the sites of impacts is of ecological interest. In this synthetic review we use the existing literature, coupled with our own observations at the Haughton impact structure, Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada to consider the patterns of biological recovery at the site of impact craters and the ecological characteristics of impact craters. Three phases of recovery are suggested. The Phase of Thermal Biology, a phase associated with the localized, ephemeral thermal anomaly generated by an impact event. The Phase of Impact Succession and Climax, a phase marked by multiple primary and secondary succession events both in the aquatic realm (impact crater-lakes) and terrestrial realm (colonization of paleolacustrine deposits and impact-generated substrata) that are followed by periods of climax ecology. In the case of large-scale impact events (> 104 Mt), this latter phase may also be influenced by successional changes in the global environment. Finally, during the Phase of Ecological Assimilation, the disappearance of the surface geological expression of an impact structure results in a concomitant loss of ecological distinctiveness. In extreme cases, the impact structure is buried. Impact succession displays similarities and differences to succession following other agents of ecological disturbance, particularly volcanism.
